Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA) has been awarded a grant of $35,000 from the State of Illinois Department of Veteran’s Affairs to provide sports and recreation programs to returning veterans. Many of the wounded veterans have been introduced to adaptive sports during their rehab, however when they return home they may not be unaware of to how to access these programs, sports activities and the necessary adaptive equipment available in their home town. GLASA’s Military Program will work with the local veterans’ hospitals, American Legions, AM Vets, and the Disabled American Veterans to indentify these veterans in the greater Chicagoland area.
GLASA will provide the one on one outreach, support, and education needed for successful participation in sports, recreation and access to GLASA’s programs and other area adaptive sports agencies. Additional clinics and sports programs will also be offered to the military and their families. The GLASA Military Program will offer a continuum of services ranging from the individual looking to partake on a recreational level to the veteran looking to compete at the elite level such as the Paralympics.
