U.S. PARALYMPICS:
McGrory Sets New World Record in 5,000m

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 22, 2008

IBACH, Switzerland – Today, wheelchair racer and Paralympic hopeful Amanda McGrory (Champaign, Ill.) broke her previous world record in the women’s wheelchair 5,000m with a time of 11:29.95 (previous – 11:39.43) at the Swiss Racing Series--Daniela Jutzeler Memorial Meet in Ibach, Switzerland.

"I spoke with Adam (McGrory’s coach) before the race and he encouraged me to run 'my' race,” said McGrory. “I stuck to the plan and it paid off. You can't race the 5000 alone - there was a strong group of women out there today and I was defiantly reliant upon them. In the end, I felt good, and today I was the strongest one."

McGrory has built a name for herself on the international wheelchair racing circuit with a resume that includes a first place finish in the 5,000m at the 2007 Meet in the Heat, Atlanta, Ga., a third place finish in the 1,500m at the Boiling Point Wheelchair Track Classic, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and a gold and silver finish at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships in Assen, The Netherlands, in the 800m and 400m, respectively.

U.S. teammate and Paralympian Cheri Blauwet (Menlo Park, Calif.) took third place honors with a finish time of 11:30.95.

Official meet results can be found online at http://www.rollstuhlsportevents.ch/index.php?id=128&L=1.

UP NEXT:  McGrory will compete at the 2008 U.S. Paralympic Trials – Track & Field in Tempe, Arizona, June 12-15, which is the sole qualifying event for nomination to the 2008 U.S. Paralympic Track & Field Team that will compete at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.
